As a part of its Annual Transportation Planning
Services Contract with the Georgia Department of Transportation
(GDOT), the Middle Georgia Regional Commission (MGRC) was
involved in the following bicycle-pedestrian activities in FY
11:
• The MGRC continued to update the
Regional Bicycle-Pedestrian Website on a quarterly basis with
the latest news and information about local and regional bicycle
and pedestrian plans and programs, bicycle and pedestrian safety
and design, and the organizations and clubs in the Middle
Georgia region that are active in promoting bicycling and
walking in their respective communities.
• A
Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan was
prepared for the City of Forsyth.
• Completed
Phase I of a
feasibility study pertaining to establishment of
linkage and connectivity through the use of multi-use trails,
greenways, conservation areas, and recreational facilities along
the Ocmulgee and Oconee Rivers.
In FY 12,
the MGRC will undertake the following bicycle-pedestrian
activities:
• The MGRC plans to work with the
bicycle and pedestrian community to make the regional website
even more informative and useful.
• A Sidewalk Plan will be developed
and prepared for the City of Centerville.
• Partnering again with neighboring
Regional Commissions, the MGRC will prepare
Phase II of a
feasibility study pertaining to establishment of linkage and
connectivity through the use of multi-use trails, greenways,
conservation areas, and recreational facilities along the
Ocmulgee and Oconee Rivers.
• The Middle Georgia Regional
Commission (MGRC) was recently awarded Section 5316 - Job
Access and Reverse Commute (JARC) funding assistance to
establish and implement a regional Mobility Manager program.
The MGRC Mobility Manager will serve the general public
through conceptualizing, planning, developing, and operating
programs that respond to and influence the demands of the
Rural Human Services Transportation (RHST) market.
In an effort to assist the MGRC Mobility Manager in
identifying methods to improve current levels of
coordination, increase cost-effectiveness, while maintaining
or improving existing levels of service, a Regional RHST
Advisory Committee is being formed. The RHST Advisory
Committee will bring together key stakeholders that will
serve as the basis for the future coordination of essential
public transit services throughout the region.
Bicycle and pedestrian activities are an emerging mode of
transit in Middle Georgia and will be evaluated and
considered by the RHST Advisory Committee. Stay tuned for
more information on Mobility Management in Middle Georgia.
Look for updates on each of
these projects over the course of the coming year.
