As a part of its Annual Transportation Planning Services Contract with the Georgia Department of Transportation, the Middle Georgia Regional Commission (MGRC) was involved in the following bicycle-pedestrian activities in FY 09:

  • The MGRC provided technical assistance to the Central Georgia Rail-to-Trail Association (CGRTA, Inc.) This assistance included preparing for and attending the quarterly meetings of the organization, developing and sending out letters to key stakeholders requesting a meeting to discuss the proposed rail-to-trail facility and to gain their support for the project, and developing a brochure that highlighted the key facts about the rail-to-trail corridor and the organization. In addition, the CGRTA, Inc. Board established their own website (www.cgrta.org) as another means of communicating to the general public about their vision of developing a multi-use trail to connect the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail in Macon to the Oconee River Greenway in Milledgeville.
  • The MGRC developed and prepared Pedestrian Facility/Sidewalk Infrastructure Improvement Plans for the City of Gordon, the City of Jeffersonville and the City of Roberta. This is addition to the Plans that were prepared for the City of Forsyth and the City of Hawkinsville in FY 08. The focus of these reports was to provide community officials in these communities with a plan for current and future sidewalk maintenance, as well as recommendations for expansion to major activity centers (including the downtown area) and neighborhoods not currently served by pedestrian transportation facilities.
  • Using maps provided by Georgia DOT, the MGRC traveled all of the state highways in the region and marked on the map the presence of rumble strips and shoulders on both sides of the road using several different categories. This rumble strip inventory is intended to provide guidance to Georgia DOT in planning future bicycle facilities along state routes and setting rumble strip policy.
  • Finally, the MGRC updated the Regional Bicycle-Pedestrian Website on a quarterly basis with the latest news and information about local and regional bicycle and pedestrian plans and programs, bicycle and pedestrian safety and design, and the organizations and clubs in the middle Georgia region that are active in promoting bicycling and walking in their respective communities. Over the course of the upcoming fiscal year, the MGRC plans to work with the bicycle and pedestrian community to make the website a more informative and useful tool.
