Regional Bike and Pedestrian Plan
In 2005,
Middle Georgia Regional Commission (RC), with funding from
the Georgia Department of Transportation, devised a Regional Bike
and Pedestrian Plan covering the 11-county region in Middle Georgia.
The RC’s goal was to focus on the subject areas that would generate
the most interest and have the most impact in our region. The Middle
Georgia Bicycle/Pedestrian Plan focused on the following topics:
- Establishing a System of Interregional Bike and Shared-Use Trails
connecting major regional points of interest;
- Improving accessibility to the downtown areas in the region;
- Establishing supporting marketing/outreach programs;
- Establishing Safe Routes to School programs in several
school districts; and
- Establishing two pilot local bicycle/pedestrian plans
(Milledgeville-Baldwin County and Eatonton-Putnam County.
In 2010, the Middle Georgia Regional Commission prepared an update to
the Regional Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan. The amended Plan contains five
major sections: an Existing Conditions Analysis, a Needs Assessment, a listing
of Goals, Objectives and Performance Measures, identification of Interregional
Bicycle Routes and Multi-Use Trails Network, and a Five-Year Implementation Strategy.
This update process was again made possible by funding assistance from GDOT.
